A group that rose and fell on the basis of their refusal to simplify, categorize, or in any other way restrict their eclectic musical voice (the term alternative applies to their music, but so do ska, soul, rock, metal, and other categories), Fishbone's live shows were a hot ticket item during the punk and grunge eras of the 80s and 90s. It seemed like the band was destined for worldwide fame, only for the unpredictability of life to whittle their members and reputation down to something decidedly less prevalent these two decades later.
On the basis of the performances seen in the documentary film Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone alone, the fact that this one-of-a-kind group never hit the big time is indeed something of a tragedy. "I've seen them do every style," declares musician Mike Watt, "in the same song!" The celebrities who appear to praise and reflect on their career are a further testament to both their creative impact and all-over-the-place style, from Gwen Stefani and Eugene Hütz (of Gogol Bordello) to Ice-T and Tim Robbins. In many ways, they were musicians for other musicians, as it usually took a talent to recognize just how skilled Fishbone truly was.
